Bull fighting
This sporting event is a major attraction in Kakamega.
Two large bulls are brought into a large open field
to fight. Before the fight, they are given some traditional
brew to charge them up.
The event attracts a crowd of excited onlookers some
singing, dancing and blowing traditional horns in support
of their favourite bull. The fights last between five
and 30 minutes ending when the defeated bull flees.
Bulls from different villages are primed to take part
and defend the local honour. Fighting bulls command
great respect, and in the days before a fight, the bull
is showered with praise, blessings and ceremonial songs.
Bullfights are held throughout the year and are fast
becoming a commercial venture, with the champion bull’s
owner winning money.

circumcision songs and dances are common during this
season. Very early in the morning, initiates are taken
to the river and covered with mud before they face the
cut. once a boy successfully and bravely faces the circumciser’s
knife, he is declared a man and songs of praise rent
the air. |
