| The Maasai Mara National Reserve is 270 km from
Nairobi, a five hour drive and 45 minutes by air. For
a full package of scenery, game and the ultimate bush
experience, the Mara is the place to be. The National
Reserve was the shooting location for the film ‘out
of Africa’ and remains the location for the British
Broadcasting Corporation’s Big Cat Diary wildlife
series.
The resting place of the big five, the reserve’s
major attraction is the great wildebeests and zebras
migration from the serengeti in Tanzania to the Mara.
This annual event happens between July and september
and is the greatest show on earth.
These animals cross over to Kenya through the Mara
River. you are bound to see the pretentious crocodiles
lazing away under the water only to dramatically break
out of their sleep and snap up the migrating wildebeests
and Zebra. The huge hippos can also be found submerged
in the water, raising their heads above the water occasionally
to get some air. Game drives are only conducted during
the day by organised game drives or once in the early
morning through the balloon safari a spectacular way
to begin your morning with the African sunrise.
Kerio Valley is a 1, 219m deep bio-diversity
area where you will find rare plant species. To get
there from Nairobi, take the Nairobi Nakuru road (Great
North Road) and divert to the Kabarnet road and go past
Eldama Ravine. The scenery is nice as you drive down
the winding road.
Nandi Hills are located in the Rift
Valley highlands. The area is a rich agricultural land
where tea grows in abundance. From a distance, the massive
acres of land look like carpeted fields. The view is
amazing and the cool temperature will make you yearn
for a cup of tea!
