Did You Know?
- The Rift Valley is
one of the wonders of the world
- It is 6000 km long
- It stretches from Syria
and Lebanon in the Middle East, down through
Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi to the lower
Zambezi River valley in Mozambique
- It is deepest to the
north of Nairobi
- Since the valley has
no outlet to the sea, its lakes tend to be shallow
and have a high mineral content caused by evaporation
which leaves the salts behind
- That Lake Elmenteita.
Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru are
all alkaline lakes found on the Rift Valley
- These alkaline lakes
form an ideal breeding ground for algae and
millions of birds flock to these soda lakes
to feast on the abundant food supply of algae
and fish.
