Did You Know?

  • The Rift Valley is one of the wonders of the world
  • It is 6000 km long
  • It stretches from Syria and Lebanon in the Middle East, down through Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi to the lower Zambezi River valley in Mozambique
  • It is deepest to the north of Nairobi
  • Since the valley has no outlet to the sea, its lakes tend to be shallow and have a high mineral content caused by evaporation which leaves the salts behind
  • That Lake Elmenteita. Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru are all alkaline lakes found on the Rift Valley
  • These alkaline lakes form an ideal breeding ground for algae and millions of birds flock to these soda lakes to feast on the abundant food supply of algae and fish.
