Nyanza province is home to the
world’s second largest freshwater lake –
Lake Victoria. The province is located on the
south-western part of Kenya, bordering Uganda. It covers
16,162 sq km including 3,636 sq km of Lake Victoria.
The provincial capital of Nyanza is Kisumu City which
is also the third largest city in Kenya. Originally
known as Port Florence it came into existence when the
railway from Mombasa reached there in 1901. In December
2001 Kisumu town was elevated to city status.
Major towns in Nyanza are Kisii, Siaya and Homa Bay.
The inhabitants of
the province include the Luo – who are the majority
tribe. Other communities in the area include the Kuria,
Gusii, and Suba. These communities have very interesting
cultures and traditions. The main economic activities
in Nyanza are fishing and agriculture. Crops
grown in the area include; cotton, sugarcane, coffee,
bananas and tea. |

By road, Kisumu is approximately 350
km from Nairobi. Take the A104 (Nairobi Nakuru highway)
through Nakuru town, followed by the B4 (Kericho Kisumu
highway) through Kericho town to Kisumu. By air it takes
45 minutes using Kisumu airport located to the north
west of Kisumu town. The airport is served by Kenya
Airways and East African Air.
There is also a train service operates the Nairobi-Kisumu
route running from Mombasa through Nairobi to Uganda.
The trains travel every evening from Nairobi on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday and from Kisumu to Nairobi on Tuesday,
Thursday and Sunday.
Private and public transport vehicles to Kisumu City
are also available at various bus terminals in major
cities. |
