The Giraffe Centre is the creation of a Kenyan conservation
organisation, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife,
Kenya (AFEW). It was founded in 1979.
Visitors get the opportunity to come into close contact
and feed these tall graceful animals. The visit can
be combined with a look at Daisy Rothschild’s
home, Giraffe Manor, which is also one of Kenya’s
best-known guesthouses.
The Mamba Village and Ostrich
Park are located on the same property just
up the road from the Bomas of Kenya off the lang’ata
Road.
Mamba is the swahili term for crocodile. Children and
adults are always thrilled to watch the families of
crocodiles languidly wile the day away beside their
shallow pools. Feeding time is quite a spectacle as
you watch the professional attendants walk into the
crocodiles’ enclosures to toss chunks of meat
into their eagerly awaiting open jaws.
Visitors can also go fishing in the man made lake and
any boat rider who catches fish from the lake is allowed
to keep them.
A walk across the bridge over the lake leads you to
the ostrich park where the tall feathered creatures
approach the wooden fence to gape at visitors with curious
large eyes. There is also a lounge and restaurant at
the Mamba village where visitors can enjoy meals and
refreshments during their visits. |
