Central Kenya is located just north of
Nairobi, reaching out to Mt Kenya and including important
towns such as Thika and Nyeri. The community in this
area predominantly consists of the Bantu speaking Agikuyu,
Aembu and Ameru.
The Agikuyu are the largest ethnic community in Kenya
and although they live all over Kenya, most can trace
back their ancestry to the area surrounding Mt Kenya.
Stunning views of rolling hills carpeted with all
manner of cultivated vegetation, attest to the deeply
ingrained agricultural culture in this region. The diverse
ecosystems within the central region mean that the terrain
caters for a large variety of crops, coffee, tea, maize,
mangoes and even rice fields.
Livestock farming also forms a mainstay for the people
of Central Kenya. Much of Kenya’s dairy industry
is also based here. The provincial headquarter is Nyeri.
The Province is divided into seven districts, namely:
Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Maragua, Murang’a,
Thika and Kiambu. The climate of Central Province is
generally cooler than that of the rest of the country
due the region’s relatively higher altitude.
